Joyce DiDonato zingt ‘Over The Rainbow’ voor vervolgde LHBT’s

De Amerikaanse mezzo-sopraan Joyce DiDonato heeft tijdens de Last Night of the Proms haar uitvoering van Over The Rainbow opgedragen aan vervolgde LHBT’s wereldwijd – en met nadruk ook aan LHBT’s in Rusland.

Het voornemen om deze klassieke song van Harold Arlen uit The Wizard of Oz – beroemd geworden in de uitvoering door gayicoon Judy Garland – op te dragen aan vervolgde LHBT’s wereldwijd werd door DiDonato aan de vooravond van de Last Night of the Proms bekend gemaakt in een interview met de BBC en op haar weblog. Daar schreef ze:

On Saturday night I will be the honored guest of the BBC Proms and will lend my voice to the greatest party for Classical Music on the planet: the Last Night of the Proms. I am MOST honored and feel incredibly humbled to be asked to take part.  We programmed “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” ages ago, but as the Russian law came into focus and I felt this impending sense of dread wash over me, I knew that I simply had to personally dedicate my performance on Saturday to all of those brave, valorous gay and lesbian souls whose voices are currently being silenced – either by family, friends, or by their government. As I’ve done in the past, this is a very individual dedication made only here (not on the stage of the glorious Royal Albert Hall), but I do invite you all to use your own voice, in whatever (safe!) capacity you can, and speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves at this moment.

En alsof ’t zo moest zijn, de dirigent op zaterdag 7 september 2013 tijdens de Last Night of the Proms was de openlijk lesbische dirigent Marin Alsop – de eerste vrouw die de eer had de slotavond van de zomerse promenadeconcerten in de Londense Royal Albert Hall te mogen dirigeren in de meer dan honderd jaar dat de Proms gehouden worden. Nu nog de First Night of the Proms – de openingsavond is namelijk nog steeds nooit door een vrouw gedirigeerd…
